Alan J. Garber, MD, PhD, FACE

Endocrinologist

Alan J. Garber, MD, PhD, FACE, graduated from Temple University, Philadelphia, in 1968, completed a PhD in Physiological Chemistry in 1971, and a residency in Internal Medicine. Subsequently, he was a fellow in Metabolism and a junior faculty member at Washington University Medical School and Barnes Hospital in St. Louis. In 1974, he transferred to Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, where he is presently a Professor in the Departments of Medicine, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, and Molecular and Cellular Biology.

Currently president of the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists, prior service to the boards of numerous organizations includes the National Board of Directors of The American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists, the American Diabetes Association, the Southern Section of the American Federation of Clinical Research and the Southern Society for Clinical Investigation. Prior elected positions include those of secretary/treasurer and president-elect, American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists; president, Southern Society for Clinical Research; president, The Southern Society for Clinical Investigation; and president, The American Diabetes Association Texas Affiliate.

Consulting positions include the NIH, the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, the American Heart Association and the National Kidney Foundation. Editorial experience includes having served as the editor of Clinical Diabetes, Endocrine and Metabolism Clinics of North America and Medical Clinics of North America. Dr. Garber is presently the current Editor of Diabetes, Obesity and Metabolism and Endocrine Today.

Collaborative authorships include the American College of Endocrinology (ACE) Consensus Statement on Guidelines for Glycemic Control (2002); the ACE Position Statement on Inpatient Diabetes and Metabolic Control (2004); the ACE/American Diabetes Association (ADA) Consensus Panel Statement on Inpatient Diabetes and Glycemic Control (2005); the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists (AACE)/ACE/ADA Inpatient Diabetes and Control Call to Action Consensus Conference/Consensus Statement on Strategies for improving Patient Care (2006); the ACE/AACE Consensus Panel Statement on the Diagnosis and Management of Prediabetes in the Continuum of Hyperglycemia: When Do the Risks of Diabetes Begin? (2008); the AACE/ACE Consensus Panel Statement on Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus: An Algorithm for Glycemic Control (2009); the AACE/ACE Statement on the Use of HbA1c for the Diagnosis of Diabetes (2010); and the AACE Position Statement on Obesity and Obesity Medicine (2012).

American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists (AACE) chairmanships include the Diabetes, Obesity, Insulin Resistance, Anti-Diabetic Agents and Cancer Conference, the FDA Issues Committee and Guidelines on Biosimilar Product Development and the Diabetes Council.

Additionally, Dr. Garber is a member of the NIH-FDA Expert Panel on Cardiovascular Biomarkers, AACE liaison to the Food and Drug Administration and the American College of Cardiology, and past-chair of the Council on Complications for the American Diabetes Association. He has authored over 300 peer-reviewed publications, as well as book chapters and monographs on diabetes, its complications and related disorders.
